RE-BRANDING!
In view of this year's roles, I'm thinking of re-branding myself as a bass-baritone. Two things spring to mind: the reference in Joyce's Ulysses to a ' bass barrel-tone', which rather appeals; and Jumbo (David Wilson-Johnson) saying it's a useful description as you can always plead the bass parts are too low (or the bari roles too high)! Anyway, it's quite interesting inhabiting the bass stave more often..

OPERA
Bellini
Now embarked on rehearsals for my first bit of bel canto in the shape of La Sonnambula for Bath Opera - an interesting excursion into a repertoire that I haven't done before. Also a bit of a change of Fach. It's the Count, although here he's the Inspector, because the production has been set in a retirement home. Mobility scooter on stage, and I get to sing the word 'Wikipedia' for the first time.

Mozart
After that we'll be rehearsing Cosi fan Tutte ahead of a ten-date tour in the summer. An austerity production with piano and spoken dialogue; but as Don Alfonso I get to sing THAT trio and lots more yummy ensembles.

Wagner
We have 5 dates lined up for Tarnhelm Opera's Das Rheingold. We have most of a cast, and a director, complete with concept. Alex Denman is staging it in the world of Samuel Beckett. She has Alberich (my role) down as 'a shifty chancer'. I shall add that to the Count/Inspector who is a bit of a lecher, and Don Alfonso the scheming cynic...

NOT REALLY OPERA
The Roald Dahl roller-coaster rolls on: we have now done 49 performances of the touring show with music by Martin Butler and Paul Patterson. Our ensemble has morphed into a strange sextet of 3 wind, 2 brass and piano (bassoon has been replaced with trombone). Paul has come to several performances and is thinking of writing us a kind of overture
